General Information

The Technical Stuff:  I am decidedly low-tech in my approach to photography, and feel my work proves that you don’t have to spend a fortune on equipment to get good photos.  I have two camera bodies that I use; one is the first real camera that I ever received, as a high school graduation present from my parents.  Both cameras are film backs; in most cases I prefer the texture and quality that film provides over digitally captured images.  Both bodies are also completely manual – I really enjoy having the ability to make all exposure and speed decisions myself; it means that all the aspects of the creative process that goes into making a photograph are mine.  My primary camera body is a Yashica FX-3 Super and my backup body is a Yashica FX-D.  Most of my skating photographs have been shot with a Sigma 75-300mm APO lens with a Cambron 1.4x teleconverter attached.  My other two primary lenses are a Vivitar 70-200mm zoom lens and a Zykkor 28mm lens.

Because of the low light conditions inherent in figure-skating photography, high speed print film is required.  For years I shot Kodak Royal Gold 1000 film; I actually preferred the slight grain, the little bit of texture it afforded, over 800 speed films.  Since the 1000 film has been discontinued, I have shot either Kodak Supra or Kodak Gold 800 for skating.  Most of my black and white photos (excluding those of figure-skating) are shot using Ilford ASA 400 film.  I vary between slides and print film for color scenics and still-lifes.  When shooting slide film I’ve usually shot either Kodachrome 64 or 200 or Ektachrome 100.  For print film I prefer Kodak Gold or Max 200 or 400.  I often use Cokin filters on my scenics to enhance or accentuate a scene’s own true colors.

I scan my own images using a CanoScan 8600F, and do most of my digital imaging work using ArcSoft Photo Studio, Google’s Picasa image editing program, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Fast Stone Image Viewer and Pictureworks Hot Shots program on my HP Pavilion A6009N.
