* There are many excellent all-around arts resource sites. Here are three of the best that I've found:
* Alyson B. Stanfield offers invaluable guidance and career advice for artists on her site ArtBizCoach.com.
* The best of all the figure-skating portals is Skateweb. Everything about skating and more
..
* The governing body for Olympic-eligible (amateur) skating here in the U.S. is the United States Figure Skating Association
(USFSA), and the International Skating Union (ISU) oversees skating internationally. Each country that competes in
Olympic-eligible figure-skating has their own national governing body, as well. The link to most of these organizations can be
* The two major skating tours that travel throughout the U.S. are Stars on Ice (all professional, founded and now produced
by Scott Hamilton; usually about 12-14 performers, features group numbers and interaction in addition to solo numbers; travels
throughout the U.S. from Jan. thru April) and Champions on Ice (aka/the Tour of World Champions, The
Collins Tour for producer Tom Collins, or the John Hancock or Campbell's Soup Tour, for former sponsors; features both
pros and amateurs performing in an exhibition setting, a cast usually averaging about 25 performers; includes one solo number
per person plus a group Opening and Closing; travels throughout the U.S. following the World Championships, usually from
April thru June or July).
* There are several very worthy skating-related charities and organizations, if you want to get involved. Three of my favorites are:
in a plane crash en route to the World Championships in Belgium, this fund helps up and coming skaters pay for
expenses involved in training.
cultural and athletic opportunities for the girls of Harlem through figure-skating.
at Harvard University. Started by U.S. National Champion John Misha Petkevitch when he was a student there in
1972, it has been continued by 1992 Olympic Silver Medallist and 1991 Harvard grad Paul Wylie. It benefits The
Jimmy Fund, a pediatric cancer charity.
NEW YORK CITY-RELATED LINKS:
Photos were put together using photos from anyone who submitted them from that horrific day. I myself do not have any
photos included, but the exhibition is an unforgettable experience. At times touching, at times harrowing and at times horrific, the
exhibit is an incredible collection of rememberances from that day.
* Back in the 1970s, like much of New York City, Central Park fell into horrible disrepair. Then The Central Park
Conservancy was created, and they cleaned and repaired the park and brought it back to its original beauty. Today
it is still very active in the maintanance and development of the park grounds and projects. Its website is a key to everything
you ever wanted to know about the park.
- Another wonderful all-around Central Park site that I've just discovered is CentralPark.com.

FIRE ISLAND-RELATED LINKS:
* There are several excellent general Fire Island portals. Three of the most comprehensive and useful are:
* Fire Island Lighthouse is the official website for the Fire Island Lighthouse, located at the Western end of the island
and run by the National Park Service.
WASHINGTON, DC-RELATED LINKS:
* There are any number of excellent general sites for all kinds of information on our nation's capital. Among those I find the best are:
* Did you know that residents of our nation's capital do not have representation in either Congress or the Senate, the very institutions
which are the basis for life in Washington, despite the fact that these same residents DO pay all the same taxes as the rest of us?
Many people are completely unaware that as residents of a "federal district" as opposed to a state, Washingtonians actually have
LESS of a say in national affairs than other citizens do! Please join the fight to gain representation for ALL the residents of our
nation's capital, not just those with enough wealth and influence to have a second residence outside of the District. You can sign
an ever-growing petition and learn more about these efforts at: DCVote.org
TRAVEL SECTION-RELATED LINKS:
* Two of my favorite all-around websites about this beautiful resort town in the Adirondacks are:
* The site of both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, Lake Placid is a major Olympic training center for both winter and summer
sports. The Olympic Regional Development Association, or ORDA, is responsible for all training and athletic facilities
Orlando, FL / Walt Disney World:
* Two major sites that cover Orlando and Disney World are:
having to do with Atlantic City.
'THE ANIMAL KINGDOM'-RELATED LINKS:
* Many of the photos in this exhibit were shot at the Bronx Zoo. The zoo is one of five NYC zoos/aquariums operated under the
world today, WCS is active in protecting wildlife in all corners of the world, and is one of the leaders in developing modern
zoological park habitats and environments.
* I first became involved with animal conservation efforts as a child when I read a National Geographic article on the work of Dian
Fossey with the endangered Mountain Gorillas. Today gorillas remain one of my favorite animal species, whether the Lowland
Gorillas I have photographed at the Bronx Zoo, or the Mountain Gorillas of Dian Fossey. You can visit the website that is the
where you can even sign up to sponsor a Mountain Gorilla in the wild and receive regular reports and updates.
* You can learn more about the Wildlife Conservation Society's efforts to save another favorite animal, the Siberian Tiger, at their
CHANGING EXHIBITS~RELATED LINKS (Now Showing: Coney Island):
* There are many fascinating sites about Coney Island, both in history and today. A good collection of Coney Island links can be found at:
Island (based upon Ric Burns' wonderful documentary), filled with tons of vintage Coney Island photos and
organization that seeks to preserve Coney Island's history thru exhibitions, tours and a fascinating oral history project.
- This spring it was announced that this season would be the last for many of the old Coney Island rides and attractions,
including Astroland Amusement Park, as long-discussed plans to redevelop and gentrify the area kicked into high gear
with a multi-billion dollar deal to redesign the area as a high-end entertainment and amusement resort area, a la Disney
World. Since then the plan has been mired in controversy and conflict, leaving the future of the area in uncertainty. And
while these problems may have bought Astroland and the surrounding area a one year reprieve, it is almost certain that
the Coney Island of my childhood, and of my photos, is soon to be a thing of the past. You can read more about the
redevelopment plans, and the controversy over it, at the links below:
PERSONAL FAVORITES & JUST FOR FUN:
This is the completely unprofessional, purely-for-fun area where I can promote, plug and otherwise unabashedly support favorite
causes and charities, the work and projects of friends, and other personal favorite websites. If you just want the completely
professional facts, read no further. If you want to learn about what makes me tick as a person, or maybe just to discover some
fun, interesting, cool new places to visit on the web, read on!
To Get Some Good Karma Going:
* There are any number of good all-around charitable sites on the Internet. Two of my favorites are: Idealist.org and
Network for Good , both of which use the intenet to help people connect with volunteer opportunities in their
* In the past two years or so I have become increasingly aware of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan.
During this time I have become much more active in the efforts to help the victims of this crisis and to stop the genocide taking
place there. Please add your voice to the growing call for action by visiting Save Darfur.org.
* Two years after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, vast parts of Louisiana and Mississipi still look as if the hurricane hit last
week, with homes washed on top of cars, furniture rotting in the street, debris and ordinary trash left by stranded evacuees
still laying where they left it, never touched by any sort of Sanitation Department or cleanup crew. Nowhere is this
devastation more evident than in New Orleans, where the vast majority of the city has still not returned or begun to rebuild.
While progress has often been slow and frustrating, there ARE organizations getting some rebuilding done, slowly, one house
or empty lot at a time. One of the most active of these groups is Habitat for Humanity. I have volunteered with them here
in New York myself, building houses to go down to New Orleans, and a friend recently returned from working with them
down in New Orleans for a week and said they reallly are doing wonderful things there, as much as any one organization can.
They have set up a branch and website specifically for the rebuilding process in New Orleans. Here you can donate money,
find out about volunteering on site, or many other ways of getting involved.
* Right to Play (originally called Olympic Aid) is an organization founded by 4-time Olympic Gold Medallist speedskater
Johann Olav Koss (and recently widely touted by 2006 U.S. Olympic speedskating Gold Medallist, Joey Cheek) which uses sport
as an international means to help economically disadvantaged people and to promote international peace. Many of its supporters
and volunteers are world-class athletes.
* Kids with Cameras is a wonderful project that teaches photography to margenalized children throughout the
Third World, and thru their photography, the children develop confidence, insight, self-esteem and hope. A documentary based
on the project, Born into Brothels, won the 2005 Academy Award for Best Documentary. Please visit this site and support
this worthwhile project. You can purchase prints of the children's photos, along with a wonderful book featuring their photos;
all proceeds support developing the project in new countries.
* I had the opportunity to briefly meet Christopher Reeve on two seperate occasions prior to the horse-back riding accident that
left him paralyzed in 1995; in both meetings I found him to be an extremely friendly, down-to-earth person, more than willing
to share his knowledge of and love for theatre with a young theatre student. After his accident, I really got to see what a fine
human being was behind that helpful, kind man that I had met. Watching how Christopher Reeve handled his paralysis, and
how his late wife, Dana, loved him and stayed by his side despite all odds, has been a true inspiration to me, and I count both
money and awareness to help find cures for spinal chord injuries, as well as to help those suffering from injuries similar to Chris'.
I myself wear my Foundation Superman dogtag, emblazoned with the Foundation motto 'Go Forward', everyday as a constant
reminder that we can all overcome anything.
* Found Art is an international group that tries to make the world a little better, one smile at a time, by leaving small pieces
of art throughout the community to be found by someone else, brightening their day.
* There are many excellent websites devoted especially to women. Three of my favorites, and three of the less well-known are:
- Women's Mosaic, celebrating and bringing together women from different cultures and backgrounds.
* An extremely talented and popular singer/songwriter/musician in his native Brazil, Joćo Claudio MacDowell, or Jkau, is now
expanding his audience to include the U.S. with the release of his second CD, 'The Travelling Madman and the Music Box',
which features songs written in both English and Brazil's native Portuguese. Since becoming reacquainted with this old high
school friend recently, I have become a huge fan of his music and lyrics. Please check out his two websites at JKau.com
* Recently I had the great pleasure of finally meeting and becoming friends with my cousin, Troy DeGroff, and his partner,
Obie DeGroff. Both Troy and Obie are very talented visual artists, and Obie is also a musician/performance artist. You can
check out both Obie and Troy's artwork at their website, The Dark Moon Lodge, and you can learn more about
performances and download sample music, as well.
* I've recently become friends with my neighbor, Patrick Ryan, an extremely talented writer. Patrick's debut novel, Send Me,
was published by Random House in 2006 (2007 paperback) to rave reviews. It has received a five-star rating and glowing
novel about family, growing up and the glorious messiness that is life. Please check out his page at Random House at:
* When I was in college I became close friends with someone who had Tourette's Syndrome. While I had seen people who had this
condition in the past, and had heard the name, I really knew nothing about the condition. Ever since my friend educated me on
this often misunderstood syndrome, I have been very proactive in trying to pass that knowledge and understanding along. You can
find out more about this little-known and even less-understood condition at the
